All of the Library’s online newspaper/magazine and research databases can be found on the database page, found under Research a Topic on the home page of the library's website.
All electronic resources can be accessed from any of the public Internet computers as well on via the wifi within the library. Alldata Auto Repair is available at the Eastern Branch. Westlaw is available at the Eastern and Headquarters branches. Most others can be accessed remotely using a valid library card number to log in.
Types of Databases
The Library has subscribed to online databases on a wide variety of subjects. Below are some examples with brief descriptions of the types of databases that are available. For a more extensive listing, visit the electronic resources by subject page.
Monmouth County Library also provieds access to several business databases such as Gale Business & Company Resource Center which provides access to individual company info and indexes reference books and articles from titles such as Investor's Business Daily. We have purchased a subscription to Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage that provides history, ratings and financial data on U.S. publicly and privately held companies. It provides access to several S&P publications including Outlook, Daily Stock Price Record, and Industry Surveys. Valueline, like S&P, provides investment research on stocks, mutual funds and other financial instruments.
ReferenceUSA is a business directory that lists basic statistical data on over 12 million businesses and 120 million residences in the U.S. Itcan be used to search for US and Canadian businesses using various criteria. There is a healthcare provider (physicians & dentists) directory, and standard white pages for the US and Canada. Foundation Directory provides comprehensive information on US grantmakers. It must be used on a public Internet computer in one of the library branches.
Ebooks can be found in several of the library databases. In ListenNJ can be found popular fiction titles as well as selected nonfiction titles in a variety of formats. There are both ebooks and audio books and all are downloadable. NetLibrary contains only ebooks and many of them are not downloadable. They must be read on the computer while logged into the site. There are also a variety of reference books that are available in electronic format in a number of the library databases. They do not look like the ebooks that will be found in ListenNJ or NetLibrary. Keyword searches will bring up links to articles that appear in those books but they cannot be browsed.
Lynda.com can be used to learn about computers and computer applications. There are video tutorials and exercises that provides instruction in over 1,000 courses on a variety of types of software applications. BYKI is a personalized language learning system that offers instruction in over 70 languages including ESL.
Magazine and Newspaper Articles
The library provides access to databases, such as EBSCOhost, Newsbank, and Proquest, that index newspapers and general audience magazines and newspaper articles. We also have specialized databases such JSTOR and EBSCO Academic Search Premier that provides full-text articles from scholarly/professional journals. New York Times Archive provides coverage of the New York Times from 1851 to 2004. Newspaper Archive indexes newspaper articles from 1759 to the present. Each database has a title list that can be opened to see which newspaper or journal can be searched.
